Long Island City

ong Island City (L.I.C.) is the westernmost neighborhood in Queens. L.I.C. has the highest concentration of art galleries, art institutions, and studio space of any neighborhood in New York City. L.I.C. was formerly a city created in 1870 governed by notorious Irishman named Patrick Jerome "Battle-Axe" Gleason. The city surrendered its independence in 1898 to become part of the the City of Greater New York. Long Island City was once home to many factories and bakeries including the former Silvercup bakery. Silvercup bakery now Silvercup studios has produced works such as Sex and the City. The notorious Silvercup sign is visible from the IRT Flushing Line. L.I.C. has a large and dynamic artistic community with the MoMA PS1 and SculptureCenter. Some notable residents include Richard Christy and Ron Artest. Source: Streeteasy
